Riviera Maya The "Riviera Maya" is actually a catch-all term to denote all the Caribbean coastal cities and towns in the state of Quintana Roo south of Cancun down to the famous ruins of Tulum. Resorts, big and small, dot the shoreline for miles and miles down the coast, and the properties are served by the one main road in the region that runs south from Cancun towards the state capital of Chetumal. The biggest town on the Riviera Maya is Playa del Carmen, where tourists can catch the ferry to Cozumel, and whose "Avenida Quinta" (Fifth Avenue) has become a trendy hotspot for tourists and nationals alike, with chic shops, boutique hotels, and upscale restaurants, perhaps a mini-South Beach. Aside from Playa, there is a mix of large, all-inclusive resorts, humble fishing villages, eco-touristy "natural" small boutique resorts, and some amazing private villas, truly something for just about any traveler! Most everyone has a nice or even spectacular beach, and many also make available snorkeling or diving along the world's second largest marine reef system. But there are also several natural parks, recreational zones, golf courses, and much more up and down this spectacular coastline. All resorts are served by the Cancun International airport, and range from just 20 minutes to almost two-hour drives from that airport, depending on the location.
