Cozumel and Isla Mujeres Cozumel is actually the name of Mexico's largest island in the Caribbean; the name of the only town on the island is San Miguel. While the island may be picturesque, it's what lies below that truly draws in the multitudes. World-famous Playacar Reef and others that dot the shoreline along the western side of the island offer scuba divers and snorkelers some of the best views on the planet, along with clear waters and a gentle current that make drift diving possible. Cozumel's beaches are still quite spectactular, but the island has few large resorts and caters more to a quieter crowd than neighboring Cancun. The building of a large pier has seen the growth of cruise ships and their passengers hitting town several days a week, which in turn has increased the availability of restaurants and ships in San Miguel. Isla Mujeres is a small island just off the coast north of Cancun reachable by a quick ferry. The small town at the north end of the island features several boutique hotels and gorgeous beaches, and several other small properties are scattered up and down the long, narrow island. Calm clear waters are perfect for snorkeling and diving, and swimming with enormous gentle whale sharks in the summer is an unforgettable experience!
